New Netherlanders and Their European Ancestry
A SURVEY OF THE STATE OF THE ART IN RESEARCH OF THE FIRST SETTLERS' ORIGINS

TRANSLATED BY COMMERIJN PLOMP AND ELISABETH PALING FUNK
In earlier times, family history was based on oral traditions and on the few notes that earlier generations had written in their Bibles. Occasionally, correspondence would provide additional information about other branches of the family or related lineages. Not all information was welcome; families would rather not be reminded of some people or events from the past. Even if the family had been of a socially acceptable level, such information was hardly ever publicized. What was known was laid down in manuscript genealogies. Sometimes such copies were given to interested relatives. It was rare when these manuscripts made it into print.1
In the nineteenth century, the first periodicals appeared that provided a wider distribution to historical and, more specifically, genealogical data. In the Netherlands, it was De Navorscher that, following the example of the English Notes and Queries, stimulated the exchange of information on historical topics. In the following decades, the first journals and associations were founded that were dedicated to genealogy and heraldry.
The development in the Netherlands was analogous to that elsewhere in Europe and the United States. Not every journal or association survived. Probably the oldest genealogical association in existence today is the New England Historical Genealogical Society, founded in 1845. The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society (NYG&B), founded in 1869, occupies an honorable second position, together with Der Herold of Berlin. They are followed by the Heraldisch Genealogische Gesellschaft Adler in Vienna (1870), Samfundet før Dansk Genealogi og Personalhistorie in Copenhagen (1879), the Association for Genealogy and Heraldry De Nederlandsche Leeuw in The Hague (1883), and the Genealogical Society of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Salt Lake City (1894).2
